Tiny Tomatoes

Posted on July 24, 2018June 15, 2020
Delicious tiny tomato salad

Two years ago we added a raised bed garden to our backyard. In our tiny 4 x 8 piece of heaven we planted every kind of garden plant you can think of. We had carrots, beets, peppers, lettuce, spinach, beans, zucchini and a couple of varieties of tomatoes.  And it wasn’t long before we had a real, overgrown mess!

This year, we did it different. Only 2 peppers, a half a dozen lettuce plants and two tomatoes; One of the  beefsteak variety  and one plant that produces little grape tomatoes. Our garden is still a mess, but less so than last year. Everything is coming along just fine; we’ve been eating our own lettuce for weeks, we have peppers and big tomatoes on the way but our grape tomato plant is going crazy. I swear, every day it produces thousands of little green babies. And little green babies become little red (and delicious) tomatoes.

We learned years ago that when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. So we googled tiny tomatoes and google responded with recipes for delicious tomato salads. That image on your left was yesterday’s lunch.

We’ve lived in St Catharines for three years now and still, every week, we discover places we’ve never seen in the Niagara region. Yesterday we visited Butler’s Barracks National Historic Site in Niagara On The Lake.

This whole area is right on the Canada/USA border and it’s all about the 1812 war.

This building, built in 1815 after the former barracks and destroyed by a volley from the US side in 1812. So that makes the structure over 200 years old and still all together. I can only hope I look this fine when I cross  that bicentennial mark. This Canada Parks site is part of the Veterans Memorial Park, a massive recreation area we had never even driven by until a few days ago.

If you look under that impressive cannon, you will see the shots all ready to go, which reminds me of our “tiny tomatoes”

I appreciate your time and attention.  Thank you, and please enjoy your day.

Nothing like fresh veggies from your garden, really love those grape tomatoes.
